Sweet Lady Grey came to THE FARM in 1984 before it was Refuge Farms. Sandy received a call from a friend of hers who was at an auction in Southern Minnesota who was calling her from the auction ring: "There's a registered Arab mare here - with papers. It's a divorce case and they can't decide who gets the horse. So she was sold and a kill buyer bought her. But now he won't kill her since she's pregnant."
Two days later, Sandy and her sister brought Sweet Lady Grey to THE FARM. At that time, she was skinny with the start of a big belly. Her feet were in desperate need of trimming, and she was quite wild. She went through quite a time back then - even in the birthing of a huge stillborn Palomino stud colt that nearly killed her.
Fast forward 23 years and you can easily overlook Sweet Lady Grey from the rest of The Herd. She's a quiet one amongst all of the other horses who so readily hang their heads over the gates and push at each other for attention. Sweet Lady Grey will usually be standing just outside the barn, or inside the old barn with her best friend, Blaise. She watches and observes all that is going on, but mostly has chosen over the years to keep her distance from humans.
In this past year, however, we have noticed that she is changing some - dare we say that she is softening with age? She is much more willing to receive love and attention, and seems more engaged in being social. Well...she's more willing than ever before, let's just say that! We are learning of her gentle and very loving heart.
But, Sweet Lady Grey is such a beautiful gift in our lives. She teaches us about persistence and the value of quiet strength. She teaches us to live life on our own terms, and to be cautious before giving too much of ourselves until we feel safe. She also teaches us that healing takes time, and that it is never too late to share what is truly in your heart and soul with those that love you.
